Spark Plugs & Glow Plugs
An internal combustion engine requires three key ingredients to operate: air, fuel and spark. The spark is a critical engine component that provides the spark that ignites the air-fuel mixture that drives an engine. Which is where spark plugs or glow plugs come in.
A spark plug operates by directing electrical current to flow through a centre electrode, forming a spark across an electrode (or air) gap, completing the circuit to a ground electrode. The centre electrode is surrounded by a ceramic insulator which is non-conductive preventing current leakage and ensuring electricity flows in the desired direction.
Glow plugs are only used in diesel fuelled engines. Glow plugs effectively perform the same function as a spark plugs but instead of producing a spark, they produce an increase of temperature in the engine. Diesel fuelled engines operate when the diesel’s temperature is raised to a point in which is spontaneously combusts which drives the pistols and runs the engine.
Spark plugs and glow plugs often need to be replaced as they wear out quickly but are vital for the engine to correctly fire and run effectively. The state of spark and glow plugs should be checked regularly, and it is always a good idea to have a supply of both in your workshop.
