Distributor caps and rotors are responsible for passing the voltage from the ignition coil to the engine’s cylinders. This is required for the to ignite the fuel-air mixture which powers the engine. The ignition coil is connected to the rotor which spins inside the distributor cap. When the tip of the rotor comes into contact with the cylinder the voltage passes from the coil into the cylinder through the rotor. Distribution caps can wear out quickly so should be checked regularly and may need replacing.
